Rat breeding colony PCR screening test panel

Rat breeding colony screening panel

Test code: P0063 - Rat breeding panel. Includes ultrasensitive qualitative real time PCR detection and differentiation of the following common rat colony pathogens using real time PCR protocols:

Routine testing of rat colonies for infectious agents is important to help ensure the animals are healthy. Many pathogens, such as viruses (e.g., rat coronavirus, rat rotavirus, Seoul hantavirus, Sendai virus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, and rat parvovirus), bacteria (e.g., Streptobacillus moniliformis, Mycoplasma pulmonis and Filobacterium rodentium), and fungi (e.g., Pneumocystis carinii and Encephalitozoon cuniculi), can infect rats and compromise a colony.

Even if infected rats appear healthy and have only subclinical symptoms, infections can still lead to altered metabolism, immune responses, or organ function; and such latent infections can spread through a colony before symptoms become apparent. Routine screening of the colony can identify these issues early, preventing the spread of diseases and informing quarantine, treatment, or culling decisions.

PCR testing is faster and more cost-effective than culture-based testing for these pathogens. Samples for PCR testing are easier to collect and less costly to ship than serology samples.  Zoologix performs this test panel using well-established, highly specific, ultrasensitive real time PCR protocols to minimize the possibility of false positives while maximizing detection of pathogens present. Test results are presented in a concise, signed, easy-to-read PDF report suitable for colony recordkeeping, or for presenting to veterinary professionals for treatment advice.

Utilities:

  • Early prevention of the spread of these pathogens in rat colonies
  • Inform the selection of appropriate treatment regimens
  • Monitor for post-treatment clearance of these pathogens
  • Help minimize human exposure to these pathogens

Specimen requirements: 1 fecal pellet plus 1 oral swab per rat.

Contact Zoologix if advice is needed to determine an appropriate specimen type for a specific diagnostic application. For specimen types not listed here, please contact Zoologix to confirm specimen acceptability and shipping instructions.

For all specimen types, if there will be a delay in shipping, or during very warm weather, refrigerate specimens until shipped and ship with a cold pack unless more stringent shipping requirements are specified. Frozen specimens should be shipped so as to remain frozen in transit. See shipping instructions for more information.

Turnaround time: 3 business days

Methodology: Qualitative real time polymerase chain reaction

Normal range: Nondetected
