Rat parvovirus (including Kilham virus) is among the most prevalent infectious agents found in rat colonies. There is significant potential for rat parvovirus to be transmitted among animals within a breeding colony due to the high degree of environmental stability of this virus.

Rats are infected primarily by direct contact with virus shed in feces or urine. Parvoviruses are capable of surviving in the environment for an extended period of time (weeks). Thus fomite transmission is likely.

Serology has been used in the past to test for this virus in rats. However, this testing approach is often inadequate to control the spread of this virus, because it takes close to 2 weeks to generate a detectable serological response after rats are exposed. Also, the sensitivity of serological testing is often not as high as molecular detection by PCR. Fecal pellet samples can be used to test for rat parvovirus by PCR, making sample collection less invasive than serology testing.

Specimen requirements: Fecal pellet, or 0.2 ml urine, or 0.2 ml whole blood in EDTA (purple top) tube, or 0.2 ml fresh, frozen or fixed tissue, or 0.2 ml cell culture.
