Feline foamy virus (FeFV) - also known
as "feline syncytial virus"
virus (FeFV) is a typical spumavirus that is similar to the
primate foamy viruses and bovine foamy virus in its morphology
and molecular structure. Infection of cats with FeFV can result
in persistent latent carrier status. Seroprevalence of FeFV
infection in domestic cats ranges between 7% and 100%. Infection
rate increases with age, with greater than 70% of cats being
seropositive for FeFV by 9 years old (Winkler et al., 1999)
S0152 - Ultrasensitive qualitative detection of feline foamy virus
by real time polymerase chain reaction
virus can be transmitted vertically from queen to kitten, and
through salivary transfer, either via
the respiratory route or through aggressive behavior such as
with FeFV may not result in any clinical symptoms, some strains
induce differentiated lymphocytes to burst which may have an
impact on the cat's immune function.
detection of the virus is not helpful in diagnosis because many
cats have had prior exposure to the virus. Molecular detection
of the virus is a rapid, sensitive and specific means to
determine the presence of the virus.
Help ensure that feline groups and populations
are free of FeFV
Early prevention of spread of FeFV
among a cat population
Minimize human exposure to this virus
Safety monitoring of biological products and vaccines
that derive from susceptible animals
